What to check before buying a used sailboat
A used sailboat listing will show you the good angles. It will mention the new dodger and the upgraded chart plotter. It will not mention the standing rigging that is two years past its recommended service life, the cutlass bearing that needs replacing, or the through-hulls that have not been serviced since the previous owner. Every item on a sailboat has a finite lifespan and a known replacement cost. The listing will not volunteer either figure. You need to know what to look for before you travel to see the boat, and before you spend money on a survey.
Hull and keel
Start at the bottom. On a fibreglass hull, look for osmotic blistering, stress cracks around the keel bolts, and any signs of impact damage or grounding. If the boat has been lifted recently, check the condition of the antifouling and whether there is evidence of repeated patch jobs rather than full recoats.
On the keel itself, look for weeping around the keel-to-hull joint. On a fin keel, check for any movement when you push against it. Keel bolt inspection or replacement on a 35-foot boat can run $2,000 to $8,000 depending on access and the number of bolts. This is not something the seller will mention unless forced to.
The rudder deserves the same attention. Tap it for delamination, check the bearings, and look at the stock where it enters the hull. A rudder rebuild is a $1,500 to $5,000 job.
Standing rigging
Standing rigging, the wire or rod that holds the mast up, has a design life of 10 to 15 years regardless of how much or how little the boat has been sailed. After that window, it is living on borrowed time. Replacement on a 35-foot boat costs $5,000 to $15,000 depending on whether the rig uses wire, rod, or synthetic, and whether the mast needs to come down.
Ask when the rigging was last replaced. If the answer is "I am not sure" or the boat is more than 12 years old with original rigging, price a full re-rig into your purchase calculation. Check the swage fittings at the top and bottom of each shroud and stay for cracks, corrosion, or discolouration. Failed rigging does not give warnings. It just lets go.
Running rigging and sails
Sheets, halyards, and control lines wear out faster than standing rigging but cost less to replace. Inspect them for chafe, UV damage, and stiffness. A full set of running rigging for a 35-footer runs $1,000 to $3,000.
Sails are a larger expense. A new mainsail for a 35-foot cruiser costs $3,000 to $6,000. A genoa or jib, $2,000 to $5,000. Examine the sails for shape (does the cloth still hold a clean aerofoil or has it stretched into a bag?), UV damage on the leech, chafe at the spreader tips, and the condition of any roller furling foam luffs. If the sails are more than ten years old and have seen regular use, budget for replacement.
Engine
The auxiliary engine on a sailboat is often neglected because it spends most of its life at idle or low load. That is not kindness. Diesel engines suffer from under-use. Check the engine hours, but context matters more than the number. An engine with 3,000 hours and full service records is a better prospect than one with 800 hours that has sat unused for five years with old fuel and stale coolant.
Ask for service records. Check the oil for colour and consistency. Look at the raw water pump, the impeller, the exhaust elbow (a common failure point on sailboat engines, with replacement costing $500 to $2,000), and the condition of the engine mounts. A marinised diesel in good condition will run for 5,000 to 8,000 hours. A neglected one can fail well before that.
Through-hulls
Every hole in the hull below the waterline is a potential sinking risk. Check every through-hull fitting and seacock for corrosion, seizure, and proper operation. Can each one be opened and closed by hand? Bronze through-hulls last 20 to 30 years. If they are original equipment on an older boat, budget for replacement.
Count the through-hulls and confirm they match the vessel's documentation. Previous owners sometimes add through-hulls for additional systems without recording the modification.
Electrics
Marine electrical systems are the source of more frustration, cost, and fire risk than any other system on board. Open the panels and look at the wiring. Is it tinned marine-grade wire or automotive-grade copper that has turned green? Are connections soldered and heat-shrunk, or held together with household wire nuts?
Check the battery bank. Marine batteries last three to five years in most installations. A replacement bank for a 35-foot cruiser, house and start batteries combined, costs $800 to $2,500 depending on chemistry. Check the charging system: alternator, shore power charger, solar if fitted. Test every circuit.
Electronics
Chart plotters, radar, autopilots, and AIS units have lifespans of 7 to 12 years before they become obsolete, unsupported, or unrepairable. A new multifunction display costs $1,500 to $5,000. Radar, $1,500 to $4,000. Autopilot, $2,000 to $6,000 for a below-deck unit with drive. If the electronics package is more than eight years old, price a full replacement into your budget.
Safety equipment
Liferaft service intervals are annual or biennial, and a service costs $500 to $1,500. Out-of-date rafts may need to be retired entirely. EPIRBs and PLBs have battery expiry dates. Flares expire. Fire extinguishers require inspection. Jacklines, harness tethers, and PFDs all have service lives. A full safety equipment refit can cost $3,000 to $8,000 for an offshore-capable cruiser.
Documentation and title
Confirm clear title. Check for maritime liens, outstanding finance, and registration in the correct jurisdiction. If the boat has been imported, confirm that duties and taxes have been paid. In the UK, confirm the VAT status of the vessel. A boat without proof of VAT-paid status can create a tax liability for the new owner of 20% of the vessel's value.
Undisclosed modifications
Previous owners add and remove gear without updating documentation. Extra holes drilled, wiring runs added, structural modifications to accommodate a different engine or rig. Ask about any changes made during each period of ownership. If the seller does not know the boat's full modification history, that is itself a data point worth recording.
