What to check before buying a used powerboat
Powerboats sell on promise. Speed, comfort, a day on the water with friends. The listing photographs are shot at golden hour with the trim tabs down and the wake curling. What the listing does not show is the transom core that has been taking water for three seasons, the outdrive bellows that are cracking, or the fuel tank that will cost more to replace than the engine sitting on top of it. Here is what to check before you commit your money.
Hull condition
Start with the gel coat. Surface crazing and fading are cosmetic. Spider cracks radiating from hardware mounting points, stress cracks along the chine, or any signs of delamination are structural. Push on the deck in several places. If it flexes, the core may be waterlogged. On older boats, check for soft spots around cleats, windlass mounts, and anywhere hardware has been bolted through the deck.
Below the waterline, check the condition of the antifouling and look for osmotic blistering. On planing hulls, pay attention to the running surfaces. Impact damage from grounding or debris contact is common and not always disclosed.
Stringers and transom
These are the structural skeleton of the boat and the most expensive items to repair if they have failed. Stringers, the internal longitudinal supports bonded to the hull, can rot or delaminate in older fibreglass boats, especially if water has found its way into the core. Tap along their length and listen for a change in sound from solid to hollow.
The transom takes enormous loads from the engine or outdrive. On outboard-powered boats, check for any give or flex at the transom mounting area. On sterndrive boats, check the transom plate for corrosion and water intrusion. A transom rebuild on a 25 to 30-foot powerboat costs $5,000 to $15,000 depending on the extent of the rot and the boat's construction. It is one of the most expensive surprises a buyer can face, and one of the easiest to miss on a casual viewing.
Engine and drive systems
This is where the money lives. The cost difference between the three main drive types, outboard, inboard, and sterndrive, is significant and worth understanding before you buy.
Outboard engines are the most common on boats under 30 feet. They are relatively easy to service and replace, but replacement is expensive. A new 150 HP outboard costs $12,000 to $18,000 for the engine alone, with rigging and installation adding another $2,000 to $5,000. A new 300 HP outboard can exceed $25,000. Twins double the figure.
Inboard engines are based on marinised automotive or industrial blocks, which means rebuilds are cheaper per horsepower than outboard replacement. A full rebuild on a petrol inboard (a 350 or 454 block, for example) runs $5,000 to $10,000. A diesel inboard rebuild costs $10,000 to $20,000 for larger units. But access is harder, and installation costs are higher.
Sterndrive (I/O) systems combine an inboard engine with an outboard-style drive leg. The engine itself follows inboard pricing, but the outdrive adds its own maintenance burden. Bellows, gimbal bearings, U-joints, and drive oil all need regular attention. A full outdrive rebuild costs $2,000 to $5,000. If neglected, water intrusion through failed bellows can destroy the engine from behind.
Check engine hours in context. A petrol inboard or sterndrive engine is typically good for 1,500 to 2,500 hours. A diesel inboard, 5,000 to 8,000 hours. Outboard two-strokes vary widely. Modern four-stroke outboards are designed for 1,500 to 3,000 hours with proper maintenance. Hours without service records are just a number.
Fuel system
Fuel tanks on powerboats, particularly those built before the mid-2000s, can be an expensive hidden problem. Aluminium tanks corrode. Fibreglass tanks can develop osmotic issues. Replacing a fuel tank on a boat where the tank is built into the structure can cost $5,000 to $15,000 because the deck or cockpit sole may need to come off to access it.
Check for fuel odour in the bilge. Inspect visible fuel lines for cracking, discolouration, and proper USCG-approved rating. Check the fuel-water separator for contamination. If the boat has been sitting with old fuel, the entire fuel system may need flushing.
Electrical systems
Open the helm console and the main distribution panel. Look at the wiring. Marine-grade tinned copper with proper butt connectors, heat shrink, and labelled circuits is what you want to see. Household electrical tape, wire nuts, and unlabelled spaghetti are what you will often find.
Battery condition matters. Check the date codes on the batteries. Test under load if possible. A full battery replacement, house and start banks, costs $500 to $2,000 depending on the boat's electrical demands.
Check that all navigation lights work, that the horn sounds, that the bilge pump runs, and that the blower operates (on boats with enclosed engine compartments, this is a safety requirement, not a convenience).
Electronics
A chart plotter that is eight years old may still function, but it will not receive software updates, chart updates, or service support. The same applies to radar, fishfinders, and VHF radios. Price the cost of replacing any electronics that are past their supported life. A full electronics refit on a 30-foot powerboat, new MFD, radar, VHF, AIS, costs $5,000 to $12,000.
Trailer
If the boat comes with a trailer, the trailer is a separate inspection item. Check the frame for rust, particularly at the cross members and the tongue. Check the axle, bearings, springs or torsion bars, lights, and wiring. Inspect the tyres for age (the DOT code on the sidewall gives the manufacturing date) and the winch mechanism. Check that the trailer is correctly rated for the boat's loaded weight.
A replacement galvanised trailer for a 25 to 30-foot powerboat costs $3,000 to $8,000. Brake repairs, bearing replacement, and rewiring are common expenses on older trailers.
Bilge pumps and float switches
Check that every bilge pump is operational and that the automatic float switches activate correctly. A boat with a failed float switch can sink at the dock from a slow leak that the manual pump would have handled if anyone had been aboard to switch it on. This is a $50 to $200 part that prevents a total loss.
Canvas and upholstery
Bimini tops, eisenglass enclosures, and cockpit covers are expensive to replace. A full canvas package for a 30-foot express cruiser costs $3,000 to $8,000. Marine upholstery runs $150 to $300 per cushion for reupholstering. Check for mildew, UV degradation, stitching failure, and broken zippers or snaps.
Documentation
Confirm clear title. Check for liens, outstanding loans, and proper registration. If the boat is documented with the Coast Guard (in the US), search the abstract of title. If the boat has been imported, confirm duties have been paid. In Europe, confirm CE marking and the applicable design category.
The real price
A used powerboat listing is the starting point of a negotiation, not a statement of what the boat is worth.
